Manul cats, also known as Pallas’ cats, are a type of wild cat that can be discovered in Central Asia’s grasslands and montane steppes. These cats have a unique appearance, featuring round pupils, short legs, and flat-looking faces with wide-set ears that make them ideal for creating funny expressions. Their scientific name, Otocolobus, means “ugly-eared,” which could explain why they often look annoyed.
Despite their large appearance, the Manul’s fluff gives the impression that it is much bigger than it actually is, as it weighs about the same as a domestic cat. These adorable creatures thrive at high altitudes up to 15,000ft and prefer a colder climate. However, they are not fast runners due to their short, stubby legs, and will hide in crevasses under boulders if necessary.
Although the Pallas’ cat’s expressive face might make it seem like an interesting pet, its solitary and wild nature, along with its high mortality rate at low altitudes, mean that it is primarily restricted to professional zoos.
